Yin He Dance presents Flow, a dance concert featuring Chinese dance works of historic significance and original movement by local AAPI identifying choreographers. We are back for the first time after the Covid-19 pandemic left us feeling blocked, stuck, and unable to create. Program highlights includes restagings of Song of Harmony <<相和歌>> and Awakening of Spring <<且吟春语>> as well as creations from the following artists.
FEATURED ARTISTS
Ginny Jiang is an interdisciplinary artist, teacher, and choreographer pursuing an MFA in dance at the University of Michigan. Their work focuses on Interdisciplinary collaboration, site-specific creation, environment, social belonging, gender, bias and performance, dance and democracy, audience engagement and dialogue-building. Her research integrates Chinese Taoism, feminist theory, psychology, neurophysiology, and visual arts. Jiang has been creating live performances, site-specific performances, and experimental video Which have been commissioned by 798 Gallery Week, Spurs Gallery, Peking University Center for Business and Arts Research, Guardian Art Center, and BNU Experimental Dance Company, and have been shown in a number of galleries, conferences, and performance venues both nationally and internationally. Their awards and exhibitions include Florence Contemporary Art Exchange Exhibition, Art week ltalia di Santa Maria Del Fiore, Xiamen Arts Contemporary Exhibition, London Temporal Collision, Dance Camera West, BIG SYN International Film Festival, Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, Daily Arts crossover performance, Sohu Short Film Award Ceremony, Indie Short Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Video Art and Experimental Film, 33th Korea Dance Arts Festival,International Dance Colleges Biennial Concert, Asian International Culture&Arts Forum, Huagang Arts Festival, Aranya Arts Festival, Guangdong Contemporary Dance Week, Wuzhen Theatre Festival and Shanghai Dance Arts Festival.
Jiang graduated from Beijing Normal University with a BFA where she was awarded a full fellowship and non-examination to obtain her MFA. She also studied as an exchange student at t National High Conservatory Of Music And Dance Of Lyon. Jiang is a leading modern dance teacher with extensive experience in both professional and higher education. She committed to promoting education based on embodied practice based education. She once served as a lecturer at Beijing Jiaotong University and Beijing Normal University. She is also committed to the development and research of modern dance energy developed and movements in places such as Beijing Fengtai No. 2 Middle School, Beijing Zhongguancun No. 3 Primary School, and Ningbo Li Huili Middle School.
Irene Hsiao is a dancer, writer, and multidisciplinary artist. Her work has been presented at Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Textile Week, EXPO Chicago, Jackson Park, Millennium Park, Ragdale Foundation, Krannert Art Museum, Tiny Dance Film Festival, A-Squared Asian American Performing Arts Festival, Pivot Arts Festival, Bridge Dance Festival, and Midwest Regional Alternative Dance Festival. She is 2022-23 Fellow at High Concept Labs, first Artist in Residence at 21c Museum Hotel in 2022-2023, inaugural Artist in Residence at the Smart Museum of Art in 2020 and 2021, and a 2020 Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist.
Angela Tam is the founding Artistic Director of Yin He Dance. She is a dancer, choreographer, and teaching artist. Her work reflects her different eras. Angela is a first generation Chicago native and has been studying Chinese dance for more than 20 years. Her traditional Chinese medicine element is water. She spent the pandemic feeling stangnant and blocked. Now she is working towards change. Join her in her flow era.
Timothy Tsang is a queer Chinese-American dance teacher, performer & choreographer. Born in Chicago, IL, Timothy Tsang began his dance journey in Shanghai, China, where he started taking classes in street dance styles at a local studio. After a decade in Shanghai, he returned to the Chicago suburbs to complete high school and obtained his BA in Dance from Columbia College Chicago. This rich experience has granted Tsang a distinctive perspective on various cultures, fostering a deep appreciation for the diverse facets of his own identity.
During his time at Columbia College Chicago, Tsang performed original works by Paige Cunningham-Calderella, Bob Eisen, and Stephanie Paul, as well as repertoire by Merce Cunningham. In 2016, Tsang received a commission from Columbia College Chicago to choreograph for its Open House, held at the Auditorium Theatre. He has since performed with various companies in Chicago, including Ardent Dance Company, South Chicago Dance Theatre, Mordine & Company Dance Theater, Dance in the Parks Chicago, The Seldoms, and Mandala Arts.
Notably, he has set choreography for Esoteric Dance Project, Mordine & Company Dance Theater, and Evanston Dance Ensemble, presenting his works at venues such as the Auditorium Theatre, Links Hall, Fulton Street Collective, Studio5, and the Edge Theater. Many of Tsang’s choreographic endeavors have centered around inquiries into identity, contributing to a deeper connection with cultural narratives that shape his identity as a queer Chinese-American artist.
Currently, Tsang is enrolled at the University of Michigan, actively pursuing an MFA in Dance. His studies focus on exploring the intersections between cultures, identities, and dance, with the goal of further developing a multidisciplinary practice and refining his voice as a Queer Chinese-American artist.
